MOT

The MOT is an annual test of a vehicle’s safety and roadworthiness and includes an exhaust emissions test on any vehicle over three years old.

Here at Motech Autocentres in Newbury, our MOT Test team will guarantee that your vehicle is safe to drive and meets the minimum standards set by VOSA.

We test Vehicle Class 4, 5 & 7

The following items will be inspected:

Lamps, Reflectors and Electrical equipment

Lights

Front lights, rear lights, fog lights, brake lights, indicator and the registration plate lights will all be inspected.

Headlight will be measured to ensure the aim is below the horizontal level, so as not to glare other road users.

Horn

The horn must be functioning fully. It must be loud enough to be able to alert other road users.

Battery

The battery will be inspected for leakages and must be fixed securely inside the vehicle.

Electrical wiring

Wiring will be inspected for damage.

Vehicles with a towbar

Electrical sockets will be tested to ensure that it correctly operates.

Steering and Suspension

Steering

The steering wheel will be tested and inspected for wear or damage. Steering locks where fitted locking will be checked to ensure it only locks when the vehicle is not running. Power steering fluid levels will be inspected.

Suspension

Suspension components will be checked for corrosion or distortion.

Brakes

A brake performance test will be conducted as well as the overall condition of the brakes, pedals and levers.

Tyres

A tyres tread depth must not be below the legal limit of 1.6mm, Tyres will be inspected for, lumps, bulges, tears or cuts in excess of 25mm. Run-flat tyres will be tested to ensure the warning light is operating correctly.

Seat belts and restraint systems

Seat belts and restraint systems will be inspected to ensure they are functioning effectively.

Body

Body

All components must be rust free with no sharp edges.

Registration plates

A registration plate must be fitted securely at the front and rear of the vehicle and must be clearly visible from 20 metres away.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

A VIN plate must be secured to the vehicle, or etched on the body or chassis of the vehicle.

Speedometer

A speedometer must be fitted, and the tester will check that it can be illuminated.

Exhaust, Fuel and Emissions

Exhaust system

An inspection of the exhaust to make sure that it does not have any leaks.

Fuel system

The fuel system will be checked for leaks.

Exhaust Emissions

• Emissions must be inspected to ensure they are within the advised legal limit.
• The exhaust system will be checked for blue or black smoke.

Mirrors and Wipers

Mirrors and wipers

• Mirrors must be secure and effective.
• Wipers and washers must work effectively.

Windscreen

There must not be any damage or other obstruction larger than 40mm on the windscreen.

Whether a windscreen damage results in an MOT failure also depends on where the damage is located

If your vehicle does not pass the MOT, you will receive a (VT30) a MOT failure certificate along with a report on the areas that require attention.

Repairs and Re-Test

If your vehicle has failed the MOT Test, you will need to repair the issues listed on the certificate before having your car retested.

At Motech Autocentres we can retest your vehicle for free providing that you leave the vehicle at our test centre for the repairs to be rectified within 10 working days.

Our team will be happy to sort out the necessary repairs for you, but you are certainly entitled to take the car away for repairs and bring it back to us for a free partial retest – but only if your previous MOT certificates has not already expired.

The re-test should be done within 10 days.

Without a valid MOT certificate, you are no longer allowed to drive the vehicle.

If you cannot wait for your vehicle to be repaired and re-tested, we could provide you with a courtesy car in the meantime.

If you bring your car back to be re-tested after 10 working days, you will be charged for a full MOT.
